I was in 2nd grade when Bobby Douglass gained 968 yards in a 14-game season in 1972 ...... if there was a 16-game schedule back then, Douglass certainly would have been the first QB ever to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season ...... something that would not be accomplished for 34 more years, when Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons finally did it with 1,039 yards in 2006.



MAJOR IRONY: l In 1978, the Colts were considering signing Bobby Douglass when Bert Jones went down with a shoulder injury in the final pre-season game against the Detroit Lions ...... instead, Douglass was signed by the Green Bay Packers, where he finished his career as a back-up that season to David Whitehurst when Lynn Dickey was out with a broken leg.

Manning did have more escapability than Daniel Jones does. Manning was similar to Bert Jones when he scrambled. They were both almost as good as Fran Tarkenton in that regard.

On the whole, I believe that they are/were a wash......if Daniel Jones had played for Manning's Saints teams, I don't think that he would have had any more success than Manning did. I also don't think that Manning would have done any better than Daniel Jones did with all of those New York Giants teams did that Jones played for either, except perhaps stay on the field more without getting injured as much.

Speaking of Bert Jones, our fellow poster l bertjones l is alive and well ...... he has not made any posts here on ColtFreaks in almost 3 years, but I noticed that he logged in on Wednesday afternoon.

I sent him a private message, saying that I was glad that he was apparently OK.

Daniel Jones’ Ball Security Made the Colts’ Win Over the Texans More Difficult

INDIANAPOLIS – One of the NFL’s more critical in-game battles for a quarterback involves aggression versus caution.

Stand in the chaotic pocket, and deliver a pass under pressure ???

Or ...... realize that the opportunity to make a play is over, and it’s time to safely tuck the football and look to the next play and the next possession ???

In hindsight, Daniel Jones should have opted for the latter in the Indianapolis Colts’ 19-17 win over the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.

The Colts ended a few debilitating streaks with the beat-the-clock finish ...... a 9-game losing streak, the NFL’s longest active streak ...... and a 5-game losing streak against the Texans ...... but Jones made it more difficult with an INT and 2 lost fumbles.

“I obviously can’t turn the ball over like that,’’ he said after the game. “It's costly for the team. I can’t put the team in that position, and certainly understand how important that is as a quarterback.’’

History backs him up.

The Colts were a minus-3 in the turnover battle against the Texans. They had lost 19 straight games and are 6-48 all-time when they’ve had at least 3 giveaways with the opponent being turnover-free.

In each instance Sunday, Jones found himself at the aggression vs. caution crossroads.

1st Quarter


1)l On the Colts’ opening possession, Will Anderson Jr. whipped right tackle Jalen Travis with speed off the edge and swatted the ball out of Jones’ hand on his first sack of the day.

2)l The defense bailed him out when Cam Bynum and DeForest Buckner stuffed David Montgomery for no gain on 4th-and-1.


3rd Quarter


3)l Indianapolis led 13-7 at the half, and its first drive of the 2nd half reached the Houston 28 yard-line. But on 3rd-and-4, Jones made a bad decision. With a stretched-out Danielle Hunter in his face, Jones backpedaled and tried to connect with Josh Downs near the left pylon. Safety Reed Blankenship moved in and secured the interception as he was going out of bounds at the 1-yardline.

4)l Points were left on the field in a tight game, but the defense again denied the Texans with another 3-and-out.


4th Quarter


5)l Just under 5 minutes remained, and the Colts were at the Houston 39-yardline and on the verge of turning a 16-10 lead into a 2-possession game. Instead, Anderson again shed Travis ...... he left the 2nd-year right tackle on the ground ...... and an inside move allowed him to again get to Jones as he was about to deliver a pass. Jones tried to pull the ball back but was unable to secure it as Anderson and Hunter converged.

6)l The Texans capitalized with Woody Marks’ 1-yard touchdown for a 17-16 lead with 1:48 remaining.

Jones atoned for his carelessness by putting the Colts in position for Spencer Shrader’s game-winning 53-yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining. He hit Laquon Treadwell for 20 yards and Keenan Allen for 5 and was credited with his 13th game-winning drive and 4th with the Colts.

But the turnovers left a stain. Jones knew he had to be better at weighing making a play against putting the football at risk, especially against Houston’s dynamic tandem of Anderson and Hunter.

“That’s something you feel after playing a lot and playing against a good pass rush, a good front. We knew that coming in,’’ he said. “I thought that our guys up front did a good job, and it’s on me to get the ball out and then protect it when I can’t.

“So, that’s my job as a quarterback. I’ve got to be better.’’

Ball security is a weekly point of emphasis.

“It’s showing him clips in the meetings,’’ coach Shane Steichen said on Monday. “Just 2 hands on the football. We go into every game ...... when there’s bodies around you, you’ve got to have two hands on the ball."

“And playing the quarterback position obviously is different. You’re going to throw the ball sometimes. Sometimes you do have one hand on the ball, but when you’re about to get sacked or something, you’ve got to make sure ball security is at a premium, having two hands on the football in the pocket.’’

Taking care of the football occasionally has been an issue with Jones.

He’s suffered 5 turnovers in the first 3 games ...... 1 INT in each game, and the 2 fumbles against Houston. Opponents have turned those 5 turnovers into 21 points.

Jones only had 3 turnovers in his first 8 starts last season, but then it became a problem. He had 5 in the week 9 loss at Pittsburgh ...... 3 INT's and 2 lost fumbles, as he was sacked 5 times ...... and 8 times in five games before tearing his right Achilles tendon December 7th at Jacksonville.

Since the New York Giants selected Jones with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 draft, Jones’ 62 fumbles ...... 31 lost ...... are tied with Kirk Cousins for the 3rd-most in the NFL. Josh Allen has 66, and Baker Mayfield has 64.
