The 1970 Colts that won the Super Bowl was an excellent team, but they were starting to age. 1971 saw them lose in the AFC Championship game while aging some more, and 1972 saw them fall to a 5-9 season, with mostly close losses (while aging some more.)

The 1973 team was flat-out bad, and the 1974 team was worse ...... but they were gradually getting younger and better equipped for a solid run, which was due mostly to Joe Thomas' excellent work.

And I agree with your statements overall. But, Baltimore had become spoiled by winning...which was never going to last forever. Hell, you could see the cracks after 19's last great season 1967. The point being, if you if you aren't willing to last through the good or the mediocre...well you were not a true fan anyway.
