While that that 1988 trade was awful, those times actually encompassed the franchise's first interval of respectability since their move from Baltimore in 1984.

In the Colts' first 3 seasons in Indianapolis from 1984 through 1986, they were the laughingstock of the NFL ...... their final records in those 3 seasons were 4-12, 5-11, and 3-13, respectively.

In October of 1987, Jim Irsay pulled off a blockbuster trade for Eric Dickerson to immediately give the franchise respectability, and a much-needed shot in the arm......with the best running back in the game on board, the Colts immediately won the AFC East in 1987 with a record of 9-6 (they only played 15 games that season), and followed that up with a winning season in 1988 (9-7), and a .500 season in 1989 (8-8.) At that time, the notion of the Indianapolis Colts having 3 consecutive non-losing seasons was unheard of, as that had not happened since their days in Baltimore from 1975 through 1977.

After bottoming out in 1991 with a record of 1-15 after Dickerson was passed his prime, the Colts attained a similar 3-year run of respectability when Jim Harbaugh came on board as the starting quarterback ....... they went 8-8 in 1994, 9-7 in 1995, and 9-7 in 1996 while twice qualifying for the playoffs as a Wildcard.

It wasn't until the Peyton Manning era that the Indianapolis version of the Colts had a long and sustained period of success as a perennial contender.

Tell me C&O. I cried watching Peyton calling an audible his first year. Was the first real QB play I had seen in years. I was so damn happy that I had a team that actually would have something to root for. My wife came in and still gives me shit for having tears in my eyes to this day.

Both Manning and the Colts took their lumps in that 1998 season ...... Manning had 26 TD's and 28 INT's, while the Colts went 3-13 as a team.

A pivotal moment in Manning's career came in that season in a blowout loss to the Patriots. It was only the 2nd game of the season, and the Colts were losing by a score of 29-0 early in the 4th quarter. Manning told his offensive coordinator (Bruce Arians) that the game was essentially over, and asked if he could come out of the game. Arians told Manning, l "You can never ask to come out. You're our leader ...... act like it." l Manning stayed in the game, led the Colts to a TD in the final minutes of the 4th quarter to avoid the shutout, and never asked out of a game again.

Arians made it clear to Manning that he had to own every game that he ever played in, no matter how pretty or ugly the situation ...... Manning listened to Arians' sound advice, and the rest is history.

Actually Jim was just the GM at the time. He didn't inherent ownership of the team until his dad Robert passed away in Jan. 1997, which was when Tobin was in charge. Of course Jim upgraded the GM position to Polian as soon as he could, and the rest is history.

Yes, Irsay made a couple of decent moves that brought the Colts up to respectable from the cellar, which included the Dickerson trade. But then the Young and George trades pretty much drove the Colts back to being a laughingstock.

Credit for the '94-'96 teams goes to Tobin as he was hired as the GM in '94 and brought in/drafted Harbaugh, Faulk, Bennett, etc.

Jim succeeded in making the Colts relevant/respectable again, and then failed. That's a lot better than what the franchise was before that, which was a state of constant failure for a decade.

Also, he was twice the owner than his father was, which enabled the Colts' ability to maintain success over an extended period of time in the Peyton Manning/Bill Polian era.

No argument from me on Jim being a really good owner and certainly MUCH better than his father.

We may have to agree to disagree on how good of a GM he was.

Google Gemini is either full of shit or has a short memory.

The Colts sent 2 number 1’s to Seattle for Fredd Young.
They traded John Elway to the Broncos.
Gave a fortune for the rights to draft Jeff George.
Then turned around and shipped him back to Atlanta for 2 #1’s and 2 #3’s, a trade that netted them Marvin Harrison.
Managed to squeeze a 1st and a 2nd out of the Rams for Bert Jones, a Quarterback who only lasted 8 games into his first season with LA.
The Broncos sent 2 firsts, 2 seconds, a fifth and a couple of players to Seattle for a 34 year old Russell Wilson.
The Vikings gave up 3 number 1’s and 3 number 2’s for a Running Back.
New Orleans gave every draft pick they had in 1999 and a 1st and a 3rd in 2000 to get Ricky Williams.
The Falcons traded Brett Favre to the Pack.
The Brownies sent 3 firsts, a third, and 2 fourths to Houston for DeShaun Watson.
