Both Manning and the Colts took their lumps in that 1998 season ...... Manning had 26 TD's and 28 INT's, while the Colts went 3-13 as a team.
A pivotal moment in Manning's career came in that season in a blowout loss to the Patriots. It was only the 2nd game of the season, and the Colts were losing by a score of 29-0 early in the 4th quarter. Manning told his offensive coordinator (Bruce Arians) that the game was essentially over, and asked if he could come out of the game. Arians told Manning,
l "You can never ask to come out. You're our leader ...... act like it." l Manning stayed in the game, led the Colts to a TD in the final minutes of the 4th quarter to avoid the shutout, and never asked out of a game again.
Arians made it clear to Manning that he had to own every game that he ever played in, no matter how pretty or ugly the situation ...... Manning listened to Arians' sound advice, and the rest is history.
