On the other hand, I WOULD HAVE called a more conservative call on 3rd-and-14 fright there, and I'm not just saying that because of the missed field goal.


First of all, a run play on 3rd and 14 would have left a reasonable possibility for getting the first down, as a run play would have had the element of surprise.

Secondly, and extra 5 or 6 yards in that situation WOULD HAVE made a significant difference, as a 43 or 44 yard field goal attempt has a considerably higher percentage of being made than does a 50-yard field goal attempt.


And again, I was thinking this is soon as Ryan's pass fell incomplete, not right after McLaughlin's field goal attempt went slightly wide-right.
